20thC Art Deco Six Mahogany & Brass Swivel Chairs, Giuseppe Verdi c.1915
Reference Number: D6913
Early-20th century Art Deco set of six solid mahogany & turned brass swivel chairs were salvaged from the famous Giuseppe Verdi passenger steamer ship. Each beautifully styled seat stands on a weighted pedestal foot made in brass. Embedded in the back of each is a brass disc, naming the ship G Verdi.
The Italian steam ship 'The Giuseppe Verdi' was built in 1915, in the shipyards of Genoa, brought immigrants from Palermo and Naples to Ellis Island in New York. In 1928, The Giuseppe Verdi was retired and the more luxurious furniture was reclaimed and sold. The ship itself was sold to the Japanese and renamed Yamato Maru and used for Army transport, until 1943 when it was sunk by the U.S.submarine Snook, in the East China Sea.
