A Pair of La Paglia Candlesticks (2)

A beautiful pair of 1940's silver candlesticks made and designed by Modernist Alphonse La Paglia, The stylised flower decoration known as the fleur danoise, or Danish flower was inspired by his time in Copenhagen.

Alphonse La Paglia was born in Sicily in 1907, he studied silversmithing in Denmark, with Georg Jensen. By the early 1940's he had arrived in New York and was creating jewellery and silverware for Fredrick Lunning (soon to become Georg Jensen USA Inc) 1952 and La Paglia is well established as a modernist designer of jewellery. In this year he and Kurt Eric Christofferson formed The International Sterling Crafts Associates. Unfortunately in 1953 La Paglia died , leaving his designs in the hands of International.
